Days Between Two Dates

Pick two dates. You will get the gap in every unit, split into weekdays and weekends — and you can choose whether the last day itself is counted.

1 January 2026 was a Thursday.

31 December 2026 is a Thursday.

The end date is not counted — use this for nights, or days until a deadline.

The question hiding inside “how many days”

Ask two people how many days there are from Monday to Friday and you will get two answers: four, or five. Both are right, because they are answering different questions.

  • Four is the gap — the number of nights, or the number of days until.
  • Five is the span — the number of days involved, counting both ends.

A hotel stay from the 1st to the 5th is four nights and five days of holiday. A contract running from the 1st to the 5th usually covers five days. A deadline five days away is four sleeps.

Most date calculators pick one silently. The checkbox above lets you pick, and the result says which you chose.

Which one you want

Situation Count the end date?
Nights in a hotel No
Days of annual leave Yes
Days until a deadline No
Length of a contract or a notice period Usually yes
Days of medication Yes
Age, or time since an event No

When money or an obligation depends on it, the document itself usually says — look for “inclusive of both dates”, which means yes.

Months are not 30 days

A common shortcut is to divide days by 30. It drifts quickly.

From 15 January to 15 March is exactly two months, but 59 days — and 59 ÷ 30 is 1.97. Over a year the error compounds: 365 ÷ 30 is 12.2 months.

This calculator counts whole calendar months first and then the leftover days, so the answer matches how people and contracts actually reckon time. That also means the number of days in “one month” depends on which month you are in, which is correct rather than sloppy.

Working days

The weekday count leaves out Saturdays and Sundays, which covers most of Europe, the Americas and South Asia. Two things it cannot assume:

  • Public holidays vary by country, and often by province or state. In Pakistan and much of the Muslim world several move with the lunar calendar and are confirmed only days ahead, so no fixed list would be accurate.
  • The working week itself is not universal. In much of the Gulf the weekend falls on Friday and Saturday; in Nepal it is Saturday alone; Iran uses Friday.

So treat the weekday figure as a starting point, then subtract the holidays that apply where you are.

Leap years, counted properly

Every day is counted from the calendar rather than estimated, so leap days are included automatically:

  • 1 January 2024 → 1 January 2025 = 366 days (2024 had a 29 February)
  • 1 January 2025 → 1 January 2026 = 365 days
  • 28 February 2024 → 1 March 2024 = 2 days
  • 28 February 2026 → 1 March 2026 = 1 day

The rule: leap years are divisible by 4, except centuries, except those divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year and 2100 will not be.

Uses worth knowing

  • Notice periods. Count from the day notice is given, and check whether the contract says calendar days or working days — the difference across a month is about nine days.
  • Visa and travel limits. Rules like “90 days in any 180” are counted inclusively, and overstaying by one day is still overstaying.
  • Project planning. Estimate in working days, then convert to a calendar date, rather than the other way round.
  • Interest and penalties. Daily interest is normally charged on the gap, not the span — one day fewer than you might expect.

Frequently asked questions

Does the end date count?

That is your choice, and it is the question most date calculators answer silently. A hotel stay from the 1st to the 5th is four nights but five days of holiday. Tick the box to count both dates; leave it clear to count the gap between them.

How many working days are between two dates?

The weekday count excludes Saturdays and Sundays. Public holidays vary by country and sometimes by province, so they are not assumed — in Pakistan and India several also move with the lunar calendar and are confirmed only days in advance.

Why is the number of months not just the days divided by 30?

Because months are 28 to 31 days long. This calculator counts whole calendar months from the start date and then the days left over, so 15 January to 15 March is exactly two months, not 59 ÷ 30 = 1.97.

Does it handle leap years?

Yes. It counts real calendar days, so any 29 February inside the range is included. 1 January 2024 to 1 January 2025 is 366 days; the same span a year later is 365.

Can I count backwards?

Yes. If the second date is earlier than the first, the calculator gives the same gap and tells you the direction, rather than showing a negative number that is easy to misread.
